This valve used to control large flow rates usually refers to butterfly valves with a nominal diameter (DN) of ≥ 300 mm (or NPS 12" or greater). It has a compact structure and is quick to open and close, widely used in water conservancy, electric power, petrochemical, municipal water supply and other fields.

1. Basic structure and principle of operation
● Structural composition:

● Valve body: Usually flanged or wafer type, the material can be cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, etc., to adapt to different pressures and environments.

● Disc Flap: Disc structure parallel to the direction of the fluid (fully open) or vertical (fully closed) when rotating. Large diameter butterfly valves often use a double or triple eccentric design to reduce friction and wear.

● Valve stem: connects the actuator device (such as handwheel, electric, pneumatic actuator) and the disc flap to transmit torque.

● O-ring: Rubber, PTFE, or metal seals are usually used to ensure sealing when closed.

● Working Principle:
● The valve stem causes the butterfly valve to rotate 90° (or less) to ensure fluid on/off or flow regulation. Large diameter valves usually require more torque, so they are often equipped with electric or hydraulic actuators.

2. Features of Large Diameter Butterfly Valves
● Gauge range: Generally refers to DN300 (12 inches) and above, up to DN6000 or even more, suitable for large-scale piping systems (such as water conservancy, power plants, and chemical industry).

● Advantages:

● Lightweight: Compared with gate valves or ball valves of the same caliber, the structure is more compact, lightweight, and saves installation space.

● Quick opening and closing: The operation can be completed by rotating 90°, which is suitable for emergency shutdown.

● Low pressure loss: Small flow resistance when fully opened, good energy-saving effect.

● Low cost: The production and maintenance costs are lower than other large diameter valves.
